I’ll be doing a complete site upgrade to a major version of WordPress here in a matter of minutes.  It would behoove you to meander over to your favorite time wasting website *!cough!* Facebook *!cough!* while I take care of business.  I’ll provide a follow up post when all is well.

I’ll be upgrading all of the themes today. This shouldn’t mean anything for you besides better integration with our current version of WordPress (what we run this beautiful site on) and maybe a few additional options added into your theme.  Your content and themed modifications (i.e. widget choices) should stay the same.

If you run into any problems at all, just let me know.

Please make this site your own. Let us know if there are things you’d like to see us try with the setup. Kyle has done a bang up job creating this learner’s community. Kudos to him and all of you!

When registering be sure to use your Dominican University e-mail address.  We’ve locked down registrations to those e-mails that use the …@dom.edu or …@my.dom.edu endings.  Let me know if you have any questions.

I’ve created a quick screenshot tutorial for how you can go about moving your blog.

Your Toolbox

In your Dashboard, scroll down a bit until you see the “Tools” section on the left-hand side. Click on this to expand your options and you’ll now see “Import” and “Export” listed. Go ahead and click on “Export.”

Exporting for Future Use

It’s pretty simple. If you have multiple authors on your blog – which you might if it was a group blog – choose a particular author or all authors for whose content you want to export. Then, simply click “Download Export File.”

Bam! You’ve got an Archived Copy of your Blog

Told you it was simple Keep this file in a safe place. It’s what you’ll need later on.

Time to Import

You’ve registered a new account at here, right? If not, do so! and be sure to check “Yes, I’d like to create a new blog.”

Once you’re all set with your account and blog, login and go to “Tools” and “Import” in your new blog. Then, choose “WordPress” at the bottom of the options.

Still have that File?

Browse to that archived file of your old blog and then choose “Upload file and import.” Once you’ve done this you’ll have all your content back up and ready!*

* Saw that Asterisk, did you?

This isn’t an exact replica of your old site. It is your content (posts, pages, links, media uploads) but not your theme (the fancy design). You’ll have to either choose the same theme again.

This is a place to talk about what interests you in library and information science.  Ask yourself: “What do I have to say about LIS?”  I’d gather you’ve got more to say than you really know…

Additionally, think of this space as a place where you can really create a growing professional product like a portfolio to share with your peers and potentially employers.

As a community site there have been some community-geared features built-in like:

• Site wide activity (think Facebook wall)
• A member directory
• Collaborative groups
• Forums
• and a list of site blogs

There’s a heck of a lot more that you’ll discover like your own Twitter-like activity stream and the opportunity to friend and message others on the site.  That’s a lot of space to reach out to others and make connections.

There aren’t too many “rules” on this site, we simply ask that you respect yourself, respect each other and respect the space.

So what are you waiting for?  Go get yourself an account and a blog!
